Frequently Asked Questions about progressive glasses
Why shall I prefer progressive to individual glasses?
The progressive glasses are made in a way that can cover the needs of vision at all distances (distant, intermediate and near) ensuring on the one hand a normal vision like presbyopia has not appeared yet and on the other hand the normal development of presbyopia and the good distant vision.
In many cases it has been observed that people who use individual glasses that cover only one, certain distance (for example near), forget to take off these glasses in order wear another pair of glasses that is suitable for another distance (for example distant). However, this can create problems such as dizziness and headaches. Taking all this into account, it is understood that it is clearly preferable to use progressive glasses instead of individual pair of glasses
How much do multifocal glasses cost?
The cost of multifocal glasses depends on the following factors:
• The type of the refractive error. The larger the refractive error (high ametropia), the more expensive the glasses are, especially due to the refractive index of the lenses that makes
them thinner for a better aesthetic result. Correspondingly, at low ametropias the cost is much lower.
• The type and generation of the multifocal lens. For example, the choice of the latest generation of multifocal lenses increases the cost. However, it is worth noting that if the needs of each person are properly received and analyzed by the optician, all types of multifocal lenses can be used.
• The price of the frame that will be selected.
Are progressive glasses expensive?
If we think that with a single pair of progressive glasses, someone can see at all distances, while in other cases of individual glasses in order to achieve the same result, someone would need at least 2 or even 3 different pairs and additionally do the movement of "putting on and taking off glasses", the multifocal glasses are clearly advantageous over individual ones. To be precise, the cost of multifocal glasses in relation to individual pairs is probably the same or even lower, depending on the type of multifocal lenses used in them.
After how much time do I have to change them
Presbyopia is developed over time, from the ages of 40 to 60-65 years old. It starts with about +0.50 degrees ("diopters") and reaches in normal cases up to +2.50 degrees at the age of 60-65. From 40 to 50 years old, the progressive lenses shall be needed to be changed every 2-3 years. After the age of 50, this change takes place approximately every 4 years
Do I have to wear the progressive glasses all the time?
It depends on the type and size of the refractive error someone has. At high numbers of ametropia (myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia), the continuous use of multifocal glasses for better vision at all distances is recommended. In case someone has a problem exclusively with near vision (presbyopia), then the multifocal glasses could be used only for reading, at the office etc.
Do I need to do anything specific to get used to progressive glasses?
All you need to do is to follow the correct instructions of your optician and from the very first day you will be able to use the progressive glasses.
The customers of Vardavas Optics, who have made their multifocal glasses and are already users of eyeglasses (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism), do not face any problem in the adaptation and, almost all leave the store wearing their multifocal glasses
After what age can I use the progressive glasses?
In all people without exception, the age at which presbyopia usually begins to appear is after 40 years old. At this point, however, it is worth noting that the exact time of that presbyopia appears to someone depends on whether they used eyeglasses for long distance or not. In those who have myopia or myopic astigmatism, presbyopia begins to appear later, while in those who have hyperopia, presbyopia occurs earlier. Thus, the "appropriate age" for the use of multifocal glasses depends directly on the time that presbyopia appears
What are the factors that affect the choice of multifocal glasses?
The factors that affect the choice of multifocal glasses are the following:
1)The degree of ametropia (far and near)
2)The profession of the user.
3) The daily activities of the user and the modern way of life (for example use of computers, tablets, mobile etc.).
Should the frame I choose have a specific size?
The right frame for the progressive glasses should meet certain conditions in terms of its size in combination with the interstitial distance, the ametropia and the profession of the user in order to have a proper field of vision at all distances.
An important role in the selection of the appropriate frame plays its perfect fit in the nose area in order to avoid any distance changes of the frame from the eyes. Given the great evolution of the technology of the multifocal glasses, we can now choose narrower frames that previously we could not.
